Rehearsal to begin for St. Augustine Community Chorus May Concert
The St. Augustine Community Chorus will begin rehearsals on Tuesday, March 17 for the Masterworks concert – “Jubilee! 450 Years of Song”. Singers are asked to arrive by 6:30 PM at the Fellowship Hall of Memorial Presbyterian Church in order to register and pay the $25 membership fee, which covers the cost of the music. Warm up begins at 6:50 PM. It is requested that singers bring a black binder and pencil to their first rehearsal. Rehearsals continue every Tuesday until the concert.
The St. Augustine Community Chorus under the direction of the new conductor, Michael Sanflippo, will take a musical journey through the centuries, beginning in 16th century Spain with Tomas Luis de Victoria’s beautiful setting of “O Vos Omnes”. Selections from Purcell’s celebratory “Come Ye Sons of Art” are followed by a gem from the young Mozart, “Veni Sancte Spiritus”. Mendelssohn’s “Hear My Prayer” will feature the St. Augustine Youth Chorus singing the serene melody “O for the Wings of a Dove”. A masterpiece of the 20th century follows: Norman Dello Joio’s dynamic setting text penned by Walt Whitman, “A Jubilant Song”. We return to the 21st century with a performance of Rutter’s “Mass of the Children” to close our salute to St. Augustine in this yearlong celebration.
As a member of Romanza St. Augustine, the May 17 concert will take place during the 2015 Romanza Festivale at 3:00 PM at Memorial Presbyterian Church in St. Augustine.
